The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

A story of four orphans in orphan train they Kansas. Joe being the oldest, asked all to have a reunion after 10 yrs to meet at Salina Train station. His sister and girlfriend both had a rough life. Joe was fortunate to have Ben adopted and loved by a couple. Joe was the only one who showed up for reunion. So he finds his sister and rescues her. He finds Danny and helps him make the right decision. He finds his girl friend Carolyn and also rescues her. During all the rescue efforts, he meets Eva and falls in love. At the end, he kept all of his promises.
This adventure of "THE LAST FOUR"will bring both teary eyed or a lump in your throat. I found myself with those feelings. These four unwanted children whose fate was being decided at every train stop as they were all paraded in front of these people who selected the children they wanted.
These children have been so traumatized, forlorn and in some instances dissociated themselves from their fates. I feel that this the official beginning of "FOSTER CARE"systems in the UNITED STATES...These four children lives were changed by Joe Hennessey, who was very very angry at both his parents at what they had done to him and his little sister Josephine. These children with the exception of Joe Carlisle, were in the clutches of evil, evil minded selfish individuals. Joe was the only"train child"who was eventually adopted by Wil and Clara Hennessey who gave Joe the support he needed to develop into a good person, who cared about people. A sense of respect regardless of your station in life.
A good, good interesting reading, a lot of respect for life of both men and women..let's not forget the horses. As your reading, these cowboys ALWAYS made sure their horses were taken care of watered and feed. Some DIDN'T ride their horses to death or pretty close to it...I won't give away the endings, but it's a good reading..there are jellybeans😊
C.J. earns 5 STARS for this truly thoughtful & detailed possible lives of 4 orphans from the orphan train that made a 10 year reunion pact and telling of the actions of the eldest orphan & the last one picked 10 yrs prior, Joe. It explodes with action and shows that the young man is basically a good man, he helps others & is sensitive to the pain or animals that he has no fear because he knows he is in the right & so he usually wins. Gun battles that are exciting and uses different weaponry descriptions interesting. Joe also is the son of a Sheriff so he introduces himself to the Sheriff or Marshall in a town & that helps. He fights within the law. The other 3 he saves 1 is his sister, & the other 2 are real bro & sis, also. These trains did exist and I would imagine that some orphans story probably ended up similar to these 3. Great love & romance, too.
Joe is the last and is chosen and soon adopted by a wonderful couple. The man in the town's sheriff and by the time he's 18 or so, Joe is one of his deputies. When he turns 21, he returns to Salina to meet his friends.
HIGH adventures occur on every page. This would be and maybe is a GREAT middle school read.
My one caveat is that the cover looks like its an apocalypse story.
Ten years later, only the oldest boy showed up and he took it upon himself to find the others. He was successful, rescuing them all from dire circumstances. During this effort, he also found the woman that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
This was the first time I ever heard of this method of adoption. This is the multifaceted story of two pairs of siblings cast out by parents, on a journey across the West to be taken in by strangers. This tale of the four becomes the epic adventure of many as one searches out the others and helps each of them right their lives 10 years after their separation. Again CJ Petit educates and entertains with facts and fiction that is woven into an exciting epic that keeps you turning pages.
I have read a number of books by C. J. Petit and found the theme of spiritual love running deeply through all of them. The main characters all seem to be dedicated to helping meet the needs of others and are always seeking a path that will result in the highest and greatest good for everyone involved. These are people of action who do not hesitate to restore order and justice no matter how great the challenge and the danger. These characters have the values I wish to exhibit to my friends and family and everyone I meet. Thank youMr Petit.
We have quickly forgotten where we have journeyed from. The slightest discomfort today sends us to run to some government agency for help. Good to have a book like this to capture a time when, if you had a strong and loving family you had the tools to survive and give aid to those, even though not their fault did not have the things they needed to improve their circumstances. Thanks for the book.
This story was well written. It's about four children who got separated and promised to meet again in ten years. There was Joe who had a good life. No matter where he went good deeds followed him..he was on the trail looking for his sister and friends and when he found them he had to rescue them from a bad situation and getting them out of trouble. This story is also about loving and caring people that's why I love this story.
I have read all of your books, and I'm glad I read this one last. I fell in love 💘 with all of the children. It seems that Josephine wasn't the strongest one. But she was the most giving one. Caroline was the weakest one . And Danny was just Danny. But he loved Joe as much as the others. That leaves Joe. He was a mans man. He was a protector. He love Eva the way a man should. My name Eva.
What is it like to be unwanted and unloved? Kids who were placed on"Orphan Trains" from the 1850s thru the late 1920s lived this fact of life. This story provides what might be a fairly accurate accounting of the journey, the feelings, and some of the results of being sent halfway across America into an unknown world. There are many victories in this story that extend well beyond the gunfights and violence. A really worthy read.
Petit continues to amuse and engross me with his wonderful story. Well written and most enjoyable. I highly recommend not only this book but all the many others written by Pett. He gives all the drama and pleasure you could ever want without gratuitous erotica or violence.
Four children who have been abandoned or given up by their parents are separated by finally being placed with different families. They all promise to get together again in 10 years. However, they will find the promise will be hard to keep. Don't be fooled by the title of this book. It is full of action and suspense.
This book turned out to be more than I expected. After reading several true stories about the rail road children. I was not surprised at the treatment of some of the children. To read of the life of Joe was refreshing. Lots of action and suspense. Not my normal kind of book but I got lost into this Author's book. This was my second and will read more.
Super good book. The struggles of all the women was of course true to life of those times. But to get help from folks who care was amazing. They recuperate wonderfully after their abuse and led much happier lives. I wonder how that works today and if they can put it all in the past ? This was interesting story for sure. Now into the next by C.J.
This is a most unusual book, not the normal western story. It is so lifelike, full of terrible events, fear, and disappointments for four young separated orphans. But ten years later the determination and caring of one changed each of their lives for the better.
Another great book. You will need to read the whole book to understand the love and care that someone can have a trouble child. The action is amazing it will keep you reading page after page to see what will happen next. Wish the book was longer. A very good job Mr CJ Petit!!
While I have read many westerns by various writers, I find that those written by CJ Petit are my favorites. Good clean stories with lots of excitement, action and attention to details. I have read over 20 of his books so far and have never been disappointed. They are never repetitive and they never leave you hanging. Highly recommend his novels.
C.J. Petit exposed an unknown aspect of the olden times. "The Last Four" is a novel that expresses how hard children sometimes had it when they lost their parents as a result of poverty or death. it is a look at the 1800,s in a new light. includes all the action, mishaps , and romance with a twist.
Once again I am impressed with this author and the wonderful storylines that fill his books! Loved this one, and really loved Buggy! Sounded so much like a wonderful Quarter Horse mare I had years ago with the name Ladybug. I am so glad that we didn't get the lifetime count down for this one as I didn't want to let them go!
This is a great tale of commitment to a sister and to friends to find them again after ten years. Joe is committed to finding his sister and the other two children. He has to fight several battles to find them, but in the end he is able to settle down with his true love.
I like happy endings. This has one. Unfortunately, this story also reminds me of the MAJORITY of people who for even one bad decision, bad people in their lives, bad luck, bad health, or circumstances beyond their control, don't have a paladin, a hero, like Joe. What can we do for them? I'm not sure anyone knows.
Sure, fiction is what the author makes it and may fall a long way from the mundane lives we seem to live BUT C.J. Petit makes you want to know heroes. Both heroes like Joe and heroes like his adoptive parents. Even survivors are heroes in their own way.
Four orphans agree to meet ten years after they were taken. Joe the oldest is the only one who shows up. He vows to find the other three. After many gunfights he does. Good read.
This was a good book and kept me wanting to finish the book before putting it down. The only thing I thought needed to be done was editing. There were many mistakes with the names used at the wrong time and other grammatical errors. Otherwise I liked the book.
I liked the story but Joe seems to be too good to be true. It held my attention well. I do think C.J. Petit needs to take the word jogged, jogging etc. Out of his writing. He uses some form of the word way too often.
C.I is outstanding Author! Thanks for the best is books that are available on the market today! You are the only person that is as good,if not better than Louie and certainly better than the way the new Lamour authors!
It is very difficult to teviee a book when you hsve not read it!! I prefernto tead books, but do not enjoy having to write a review. Everybody should just take a chance like I do.
