PET TRAINING TIPS

Some pets may require a special adjustment period to acclimate to their new automatic feeder. If this is your dog or cat, try

1 Place the Programmable Food Dispenser next to your pet's existing bowl or feeder. (Do not turn the power on).

2 Place food in the bowl of the Programmable Food Dispenser (only for a period of time to allow adjustment)
.
3 Keep food in the pet's current bowl (only for a period of time to allow adjustment).

4 Once you have observed your pet eating from the programmable food dispenser, remove their old feeding dish.

5.0 out of 5 stars First days of ownership and already in love

I've had this for four days now and I am hugely satisfied with it. It replaced a Petmate automatic feeder and is superior in almost every way.

1) It's not difficult to program. Seriously. Yeah, because it has so many features, you'll have to use the user manual, but show me an automatic feeder that doesn't need a user manual. It was weird, however, that if you use 24 hour time, the measurements automatically switch to mL (from cups). That threw me off.

2) It took my cats virtually no time at all to figure out how to steal food from the Petmate feeder (since the action is gravity-powered and it's really only a wheel with flimsy flaps stopping food from falling), but they have not figured out a way to steal food from this one and I don't think they will be able to steal any appreciable amount.

3) It is heavy, with rubber feet built in, and a locking top... my cats had knocked over the Petmate feeder before, which will spill food everywhere because the lid screws on pretty loosely. I had resorted to strapping it closed with bungee cords. And even then, they would drag it across the kitchen all the time in an attempt to knock it over, because it was too light. This PetSafe one hasn't moved a millimeter since I put it down, and the locking lid works.

4) The bowl is not easily detachable. While my cats would drag the Petmate one across the flood, the bowl would often separate from the feeder. Then, at feeding time, it'd just drop all the food underneath the feeder. This bowl clips in nicely and they haven't been able to do that.

5) But perhaps most importantly, this seems to get the portions right. The Petmate one would often drop too little food, which would lead to my cats' determined efforts to get more (or yell at me). Hasn't happened yet with this one.

6) The only thing I liked about the Petmate one that this one doesn't seem to do is snacks. If you hold the up arrow on the Petmate feeder, it'd drop a quarter cup. With this one, you can give the next meal in advance, but you cannot give incremental meals. This isn't a huge deal, since you should stick to a schedule, but if the feeder happens to not dispense enough, there's no easy way for you to add more food to the bowl right now without taking away from the future schedule. I haven't had a problem with this, yet, but I consider it a possible issue in the future.

I'll report back over time if anything about this review is no longer accurate. But I'm happy with it so far, and so are my cats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what an automatic feeder should be.

We've had this now for 6 months and it's a great help! Our newest cat was a stray. He showed up in February of last year and informed us that we were his new family. It was a couple of months before we could let him in the house (after making sure he didn't belong to anyone else, was neutered, vaccinated and given a clean bill of health). We already had a cat and her kibble was left out all the time. She would eat when she wanted and never over ate. But Stray (original name, right?), being a stray, would eat everything. He would bloat up and then we would have to put him on a drastic diet to get him back down to his normal weight. Now we just let the feeder take care of him and he's quite happy with that. He knows the sound of the feeder and comes racing when it dispenses. Sometimes he's got his head in the dish as it's dispensing and sometimes he's sitting in front the feeder like he's worshiping it. He's very comical!
Programming the feeder is tedious. And it's important to read the manual because as it's already been said, it's not always intuitive. I've have to program this 4 times and had to re-read the instructions each time.
It is unfortunate that an AC adapter isn't included. The batteries gave out on what day? Christmas of course. As people were arriving for celebrations. And there I was. Cussing out a mechanical contraption so that I could get the cat fed! I had to remove all the food and take the parts off so that I could turn it upside down to replace the batteries. Then put it all back together and re-program it. So that the cat would be happy.
Overall though, we're very happy with this. Not quite a 5 star but better than 4 stars. I like the multiple feed sizes and multiple feed times. It makes it easy to create the best feeding schedule for our cat and keeps him at a normal weight.
