39/Smooth is the debut studio album by Green Day. It was recorded on December 29th, 1989 and released on April 13, 1990 by Lookout! Records on vinyl (including limited pressings of clear green vinyl) and cassette.

39/Smooth would later be released on the compilation album 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours along with Green Day's first two EPs, Slappy and 1,000 Hours, plus the song " I Want to Be Alone" from the compilation album The Big One. Since they were all combined into one album, all the aforementioned records eventually went out of print.

The name of the album is a mix between Billie's proposal (39) and Mike's (Smooth). Billie opted for 39 as his brother turned 39 years old on the day they recorded it, December 29, 1989. [1] [2] Unlike most of Green Day's early output, the album is in standard guitar tuning.
