WHAT IS AN SEO SPECIALIST?

When they ask me what I do, I debate in my head how to answer the question. Should I say: "I am an Search engine optimization" and expect the inevitably confused look?

Maybe I should go with my wife's answer, instead: "He organizes the Internet to get high rankings on Google." Admittedly, anyone who can organize the Internet is probably great.

Should I keep my answers short, or should I take some time and educate them about the genius of SEO?

Many professionals in this industry still find it difficult to explain to someone in a different field exactly what they do. On the other hand, when my wife, a nurse, comes home and tries to share stories and challenges of her day, I feel she is speaking a foreign language. So, maybe it's the same for any profession.


In the SEO industry, however, communication and clarity are important. Hopefully, I can clearly answer the question: "What is an SEO specialist?"

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps people find products and information in search engines such as Google and Bing. Then, an SEO specialist investigates and analyzes trends and best practices online to develop and implement strategies that improve search results.

The overall objective is to increase the level of traffic to a website by using keywords and keyword themes to improve the user experience and comply with the search engine guidelines.

Search engines, however, are always changing. And SEO specialists have to keep up. Let's think about what exactly we mean by this.

Consider, for example, a keyword search: "SEO."

In the past, search results looked like this:

At that time (2011), SEO.com ranked third in the search results. You will also notice that, apart from the Google entry and the definition of Wikipedia, the other results are all SEO companies.

These days, the results are a bit different for the same search. Now, this is what it looks like above the fold:

Do you see a topic with these results? Any kind of trend that suggests the type of results that Google wants to offer for that keyword?

That's right. Currently, there is only one agency that appears among the top ten organic results. (For what it's worth, we currently occupy the 11th position) Instead, you get many beginner guides on SEO, instructions and definitions.

Google learned that when people search for the term "SEO," they are more likely to click on the information in a list of services. Then, eventually, the algorithm changed to incorporate this behavior, and now it offers the types of results that you think the keyword is really asking for.

Doing the job
There are literally hundreds of factors that contribute to your final ranking. In addition to that, it can be difficult to determine what kind of trends Google can associate with the chosen keywords.

The work of an SEO specialist does not stop with a couple of adjustments on the website and some links spread over the Internet. Instead, the specialist has to be aware, constantly looking for trends such as those mentioned above and finding new ways to maximize website traffic.

(And with "maximize" we don't just mean increasing the numbers. We mean finding people who are ready to convert and do business with you).

Optimizing your website for search engines means being aware of these factors and implementing the correct strategies. However, as search engines change, SEO cannot rely on the same old activities. Modern SEO is much more than keywords and meta tags.

There are many factors that an SEO specialist must deal with, and that means they need a wide range of skills. However, if we had to break it down into the basics, one could say that a specialist should understand:

Why links are important
What can be done on the page to help classify a web page?
What can be done outside the page to rank a web page?
Why content marketing is critical for any online marketing drive
How social networks add value
If pay per click marketing is worth it
How to take advantage of emerging trends such as SEO video
The daily routine for someone who works in SEO could include a combination of any of these activities, which means that a true specialist must have a wide range of skills and be willing to always learn more.
